Staying safe when buying or selling a vehicle

Meeting

  • Meet in a public, busy place in daylight. A mall car park, a petrol station, or an LTO office is ideal.
  • Bring someone with you. Tell a friend where you are going.

Money

  • Never send a deposit to "hold" a vehicle you have not seen. No legitimate seller needs this.
  • Pay only when the vehicle and the papers are in front of you. Bank transfer at the bank, manager's cheque, or cash counted together.
  • Report anyone who asks you to move the conversation off DriveHaus before meeting.

Papers

  • Ask for the OR/CR and compare the plate, chassis and engine numbers with the vehicle.
  • Ask the seller for a valid ID that matches the name on the CR, or a notarised deed of sale chain if not.
  • Check for an encumbrance (bank loan) on the CR.
